I recently reinstalled my Windows Vista OS from the discs that came with my laptop. This is a Dell Inspiron 1545. I should mention that this computer is a lemon. I've had numerous problems with it starting before it was even a year old. But, two hard-drives, three keyboards later it's still run-in but I can't get wifi.
The wifi was fine before I reinstalled the OS. I noticed under device manager that the Network Adapter wasn't working. I've tried repeatedly, but the driver won't update. I've used windows update and it will try to install, but then it own't update.
Then I noticed that the SM Bus Controller driver can't be updated either.
Are these two issues related?
I've been told that it's possible that there is something physically wrong with the Network Adapter. It's an Acer. I've gone to their website, but have found nothing.
This lapop is five years old and I'm not investing another dime. I've never done any repairs on hardware before. I'd be willing to try, but I don't want to risk damaging other parts of the laptop.
Thank you! (And yes, I've googled. I've spent hours researching this.)

Dear all
Due to a virus problem, I have had to install windows (xp) on my laptop but in device manager under other devices the following item has yellow question marks:-

As network controller driver is missing I can't connect to the internet to download drivers directly from internet, though I do have access to the internet via another pc.

Thank you
Hi After a week of pulling my hair out I finally cracked it. Hope this is of some help.
Go to the following website : https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/unknown_devices.html and download the unknown devices file.(UKD). Unzip it and then run it, this will tell you the name of the device that you are looking for, if it doesn't look under Computer missing names. That is where I found out that I had an Intel pro/wireless 2200BG installed. It willalso give you the names of anything else you don't have a driver for. The rest was easy, went to Intel and downloaded the correct driver and installed it. Works a treat, I can now give it back to my uncle.
A few words of thanks would be greatly appreciated. Add comment
